While the pandemic-based shortages of aluminum t-slot extrusions reached its zenith in November of last year, lead times have remained relatively long ever since. Demand remains high. But we see signs of improvements.

Cut Bars Are Now Available Faster

This week, 80/20 reduced their lead times on bars cut-to-length down to just 10 - 12 days. Add a day or 2 to process, and a few days for shipping - and its now possible to get custom bars in around 3 weeks! That's great news.

Full length bars remain in high demand, and lead times for those remain at around 20+ days - so for now, you'd be better off getting those bars cut to your size and saving money on shipping and not ending up with any scrap.

While Lead Times Are Dropping, Prices Are Increasing

The soaring price of aluminum on the world market was already worrisome before the Ukraine situation, and now manufacturers are starting to pass those new rising costs onto consumers. 80/20 recently announced a price increase effective in mid-March. So if you have an upcoming project, it might be worthwhile to buy this week before prices increase.

Availability Remains Good

Availability at both our San Diego facility and the Indiana 80/20 headquarters remains very good. Both companies stocked up to offset shortages towards the end of last year, and that means that shortages that other manufacturers are experiencing are not happening here. We've had a lot of calls in the last 60 days from competitor customers seeking stock and we have been able to help them in most cases.

Planning Remains Key

Starting projects a little earlier is still a good way to approach the current situation with aluminum t-slot extrusions. Everything is taking a little longer, and costing a little more - but product availability is getting better and lead times are coming down.
